Backups in plain English: the 3-2-1 rule

Keep three copies of your files, on two kinds of storage, with one copy off-site.

  1. Pick what matters: Documents, Pictures, Desktop and any work folders.
  2. Copy to an external drive using File History or a simple copy.
  3. Add a cloud copy with OneDrive or another provider you trust.
  4. Test a restore. Open one backed-up file today to confirm it works.
  5. Set a monthly reminder to check that backups still run.
A backup you have never tested is only a hope. Always test a restore.
